The ancient english tradition of Wassailing at Kenninghall wood over the weekend with the Mistress of Misrule and the Green Man waking the sprits of the trees from the depths of winter..The wassailing custom comes from the Old English expression 'waes hael', meaning 'be in good health'. It is an ancient ritual which was held for many years in January in apple growing regions where it was believed that driving out the evil spirits by banging pots and pans and shouting to wake the tree spirits, would help to ensure a good apple harvest.
